Why we ignore our intuition or our “knowing”
Intuition is the innate ability to know something without having to think about it consciously. We often hear it called a “gut feeling” or you “ just know”.
How many times have you said “Why didn’t I listen to my gut” and I know personally I always regret it when I don’t listen. When I don’t listen I find myself exactly where I don’t want to be.
Intuition is bigger than we realise, it feeds our expertise, creativity, love and spirituality. Defining it is tricky, because intuition is really a feeling, a deep seeded inner knowing without conscious reasoning. When your intuition knows something to be true, there is no denying it. If you have followed these “feelings” or “nudges” that’s great as you are tapping into a well of guidance.
We were never taught to trust ourselves or our body cues, we were taught to please, to over-explain, to agree just to keep the peace. We are people pleasers, we want to be accepted and liked, we want to fit in and these are the many reasons why we don't listen or doubt or override our intuition. Ignoring your intuition repeatedly over time is soul destroying.
Here are some signs you are ignoring your intuition:
The experience or decision is followed by a feeling of “I knew it and I didn’t listen.
You either feel a manic excitement or a negative anxiety like uncertainty driving a decision.
You justify not listening to the do’s and don’ts by making up excuses.
You keep finding yourself in similar unwanted situations over and over.
One of the most important things you can do as a human being is learning to trust yourself. Through coaching you can learn to ease up on your need to control and to be absolutely certain you're right. You allow yourself to live without the need of validation from others. You learn to trust the guidance that is coming to you even if it’s not what you “thought” it would be. You learn to step away for learnt behaviours such as people pleasing and peace keeping.
